ABOUT NIKI
A Yorkshire Lass
I’m writing this piece with images of childhood holidays floating around my head. I was born and bred in God’s own county of Yorkshire. Days spent combing the beaches for fossils and jet in Whitby and Scarborough brought me much pleasure as an only child. Caravan holidays beside the beach were most enjoyable, because we got to travel 150 miles in our old Morris Marina and the excitement of the journey to the coast was part of the holiday. I’d sit in the back seat of the car repeatedly asking ‘are we nearly there?’ Of course I was always the first to see the sea as we drove over the hill from Holt down in to Cromer.
A Passion For Sea Glass Lasting Half A Century
It was in Norfolk that I first discovered my passion for sea glass; fifty years years ago. Strolling along the beaches of Sheringham and Cromer in my tiny wellies I became captivated at these vibrant shards of coloured glass laying among the pebbles and flint. ‘I’ve found another piece!’ I’d proclaim with delight. My Dad told me they were treasures left especially for me by the mermaids. That was it. My treasured journey with the mermaids had begun, along with my love for all things coastal related.
Giving up Everything
In 2010 we made an overnight decision to relocate from Yorkshire to beautiful, rural Norfolk. In 2023 after one too many devastating bereavements, we now live 100% off-grid in a tiny home in the place of my Cornish ancestors - stunning, rugged Cornwall.
My Fifty Year Collection of Sea Glass
Sea glass is sadly becoming a rarity on the British shores due to the sand-banking process that is taking place to stop coastal erosion - therefore it’s a jolly good job I have a collection of sea glass that spans fifty years to create my jewellery designs from. Many have said they think that my collection of sea glass is the largest in the UK, but I love sea glass for it's beauty, not because I possibly have the largest collection.
Tidal Treasures
All sea glass pieces and other shoreline treasures have been hand collected by myself for over half a century, from UK beaches only. Each piece of sea glass that goes into my jewellery is cleaned, cleansed, smoothed, buffed, drilled, set and polished by hand and is finally designed and created into a unique piece of Nootka Seaglass jewellery.
Nootka sea glass jewellery is much more than a hobby, for me, being surrounded by sea glass is a big part of my life, in fact I can honestly say it was sea glass that actually saved my life.
Mermaid Blessings,
